18th birthday party ideas: a Coventry planning guide
An 18th is the first big birthday that feels properly grown-up, and it’s usually planned by the parents. That’s a funny mix: a party for a crowd of 18-year-olds, organised by people who also have to think about venues, budgets, ID and taxis home.
We’re Snazzy Photo Booths, based in Coventry, and we’ve brought our Selfie Pod to an 18th at Ivy House. Here are 18th birthday party ideas that work in real life, plus the practical bits most ideas lists skip.
Start with the basics: guests, budget and date
- Guest list first. Friends only, or family too? Many 18ths do both: family early in the evening, friends once the music starts. That choice decides your venue size.
- Budget. Decide your figure before you fall for a venue. Room hire, food, drink, entertainment and decorations all add up.
- Pick the date wisely. If the birthday falls in summer, think about a joint “results and 18th” party after A-level results day in mid-August, before friends start heading off in September. If the birthday falls in winter, especially January, book the venue early.
Venues around Coventry that welcome 18ths
Not every venue takes 18th birthday parties. Some function rooms refuse 18th to 21st parties outright, and others ask for an adult on site or extra security. So the first question for any venue is: “Do you take 18ths, and are there any conditions?”
A few Coventry ideas, with details from each venue’s own website:
- Ivy House, Jordan Well, Coventry. A city-centre venue that lists birthdays among its private parties. Its site mentions a late licence on certain days, external catering welcome, and a covered outside smoking terrace with heaters. It’s also where we ran the Selfie Pod at an 18th (more below).
- Players Party Rooms, Silver Street, Coventry. Private karaoke rooms, from Deluxe (5–8) and Deluxe Plus (9–12) to the Party Room (13–16) and VIP Suites (17–30+), plus a Main Room for events up to 750 guests. Karaoke and smart lighting come in every private room.
- The Old Hall Hotel, Keresley. Birthday hire includes the VIP Suite for up to 40 guests and the Executive Lounge, with a private bar, for up to 75. Larger marquee options are listed too.

Themes that work at 18
Keep the theme simple. Eighteen-year-olds will dress up for an easy theme and quietly ignore a complicated one.
- Hollywood glam: a red carpet, gold and black, and a backdrop for photos.
- Decades: the 70s, 80s or 2000s. Easy costumes, and a playlist everyone knows.
- Masquerade: masks on arrival make it feel like an event.
- Garden festival: fairy lights, festoon lighting, street food and a playlist, if you have the outdoor space.
- A colour theme: pick two or three colours and carry them through the balloons, cake, backdrop and photo booth print.
Things for guests to do
- A dance floor and a decent playlist. Ask guests to add songs when they RSVP.
- Karaoke. Brilliant for groups of friends, and some venues include it in the room.
- Games: beer-pong-style games with soft drinks, a quiz about the birthday person, or a “guess the baby photo” board.
- A photo booth with props. On our birthday photo booths page we say 18ths are “usually booked by your parents. The booth does most of the camera work and half of it is on Instagram before midnight.”
Two booths suit an 18th:
- The Selfie Pod: a sleek standing booth that turns any corner of your venue into a photo studio. Four or five fit in frame. It’s digital as standard (from £200), with unlimited 6×4 prints as an add-on (from £375). It needs roughly 2m x 2m.
- The 360 Booth: guests step onto the platform, the camera circles, and a slow-motion clip is created. Up to five on the platform, from £300 for 3 hours. It needs roughly 3m x 3m plus head height.

Keepsakes guests actually take home
Phones mean every 18th is photographed, but most of those photos never leave the camera roll. A few ideas that last longer:
- Printed photos. With the Selfie Pod Print Package, guests take home a 6×4 print every time they visit, with the name, age and date on the overlay. Every photo still goes to their phone and into your gallery the next day. Our photo booth prints and guest book guide explains it all.
- A guest book. A Selfie Pod add-on for a small cost. Every visit prints twice: one copy for the guest, and one for the book, with pens beside it for messages.
- A memory board. Photos from the birthday person’s childhood, pinned up near the entrance.
A real 18th at Ivy House, Coventry
In September we brought the Selfie Pod with the Print Package to an 18th birthday at Ivy House in Coventry. The setup had a blue and white flower arch backdrop by Aurea & Co, a red carpet, and a props table full of hats and boas. We designed a custom print template to match the party, with soft blue bows and butterflies, so every 6×4 came out ready for guests to take home on the night.

Getting everyone home safely
Agree a finish time with the venue and tell guests in the invitation. Book taxis in advance, or share a local taxi number in the group chat. For an 18th, also check the venue’s ID policy, so nobody is turned away at the bar.
FAQ
How far in advance should I book an 18th birthday venue?
As early as you can, especially for Saturdays and January dates. Book the venue before the entertainment, and check that it accepts 18ths first.
Do Coventry venues accept 18th birthday parties?
Many do, but not all. Some function rooms don’t take 18th to 21st parties, and others ask for an adult present or extra security. Always ask before you book.
How much space does a photo booth need?
Our Selfie Pod needs roughly 2m x 2m, and the 360 Booth roughly 3m x 3m plus head height. Both need a standard plug socket within a few metres and a flat floor.
Can guests take photos home on the night?
Yes, with the Selfie Pod Print Package. Guests get unlimited 6×4 prints, and the full digital gallery is ready the next day.
Is your photo booth kit insured and safety tested?
Yes. We have public liability insurance, and our equipment is PAT tested. We can send the certificates to your venue.
